The experiment continues at the 2012 Sailplane Expo - the open electric glider event is going to be held as part of the winch-launch thermal glider event (but scored separately) using the same rules, with changes to cater for launch by electric motor.

FAQs
I have received quite a few questions about this event - will try to cover the issues raised here:

Will the thermal glider heats and electric heats alternate?
No - they will be flown together. 6-7 thermal fliers and up to 4 electric fliers will be drawn in each heat.

Will the flight line be crowded? Are thermal and electric launching together?
The field we use is huge. There is plenty of room to accommodate thermal and glider fliers together. The winch line will be well spaced, and the electric flight line will be well outside the row of winches. Imagine 30 winches cheek to jowl, and then a gap of 20m, and then a row of electric fliers. There is less chance of an electric flier impeding a winch launch than there is for winch launchers to impede one another! The trail of this strategy iover the last three years has been without incident - everyone was very happy with how it ran.

Can fliers enter both thermal and electric?
Yes - Kevin Smeaton says he can manage the draw so that entrants in both disciplines will not be drawn to fly against themselves.

Will landings for electric be 100 points within one metre?
N0 - we have changed back to the same landing scores as LEG - ie. 25 points for up to 3m, 20 points for up to 6m, etc. This devalues the landing and means that you do not have to dork your expensive motor on the spot.

Limited Electric glider (LEG)
will be run to the standard Aussie rules - 5 minute flights with cumulative motor runs - it will be run as a separate event as it was in 2009. Click here to access the AEFA LEG rules on the AEFA web site.
